Герундий в функции определения
В функции определения герундий переводится существительным или
инфинитивом. Как правило, он вводится предлогами of или for и
определяет отвлеченные существительные типа probability-вероятность ,
ability-способность и др . При переводе важно связать герундий с ранее
стоящим определяемым существительным:
There is little probability of atmosphere being on that planet.
Маловероятно , что на той планете была атмосфера .
The device has a merit of being suitable for many purposes.
There is no necessity of making any corrections.
Our purpose is to calculate the chance of the electron passing the distance x.
The independent particle model has the advantage of possessing a high degree of
physical visuality.
The observed intensity of the radiation emitted depends on the probability of
there being an electron in the upper level of the transition.
He had early opportunity of becoming well acquainted with experimental work.
Герундий в функции обстоятельства
Перед герундием в функции обстоятельства всегда стоит предлог.
In solving problems it is necessary to distinguish between fact and hypothesis.
При решении проблем (решая проблемы ) необходимо делать различие
между фактом и гипотезой .

Данные были проверены путем анализа экспериментальных кривых.

Сложные формы герундия чаще всего переводятся придаточным
предложением :
I know of his having been appointed to a new job.
Я знаю , что его назначили на новую работу.

discoveries.
This depends on the atomic weights of these substances being equal.
Это зависит от того, что удельные веса этих веществ одинаковы .
These substances are alike in having high melting points.
Эти вещества сходны тем , что они имеют высокие точки плавления .
