IV. IDIOMS
Wet Blanket
(dull or boring person who spoils the happiness of others)
James was not invited to go on the outing with the rest of the group because he’s
such a wet blanket. On many previous occasions he has kept others from enjoying
themselves by his pessimism and lack of enthusiasm. It’s understandable that no
one wants him around.
Dressed to Kill
(to wear one’s finest clothing)
The reception for the new Swedish ambassador at the Jennison’s was quite lav-
ish. Naturally, everybody was dressed to kill. Since it was a formal occasion, every-
one was dressed in their finest, most elegant clothes.
Eat Someone out of House and Home
(to eat a lot of someone else’s food)
He’s quite nice with good sense of humour but for his ability eating everyone
out of house and home.
Have Someone Eating out of One’s Hand
(to have someone completely under one’s control)
One of my main difficulties is that I’m not good with an audience. There are
guys who can come out and have a crowd eating out of their hand right away with
a few jokes.
