PREFACE
Focus on Nominals is a practice grammar book designed to help inter-
mediate learners of English improve their grammar competence and learn to
communicate effectively, accurately and confidently through solid grammar
work. This is achieved in various ways through 120 varied and stimulating prac-
tice exercises, some of which were drawn from a rich variety of authentic
sources while others were designed by the authors.
The practice book is presented in a clear, user-friendly style and is logi-
cally divided into two sections, each of which introduces and further details an
essential topic. Section 1 deals with the English noun: grammatical types of
nouns, their determiners, and subject-verb agreement. Section 2 focuses on the
English adjective presented and practiced in opposition to the adverb.
The book maintains an inductive approach, and teaches students to ana-
lyze a wealth of contexts provided and make conclusions about the tendencies of
using English nouns, adjectives and adverbs. This is then reinforced through a
range of activities to practice the grammar, including gap-filling, completion,
matching, rephrasing and editing (proofreading, or error analysis) through to
translation and creative oral and writing tasks. Focus on Nominals provides an
abundance of both guided and communicative practice exercises to help students
internalize and master the new structures.
Additional warning notes, marked ‘NB’ and pointing out potential prob-
lems, help learners to understand and use English grammar correctly. The book
also features grammar summary tables for students to complete. Revision exer-
cises give students a chance to consolidate what they have learnt. The book will
prepare students for more advanced grammar courses as well as for Use of Eng-
lish tests. The practice book is flexible in design and suitable for use in class,
homework or self-study.
