Gas from animals
In parts of India and China people use biogas for cooking. They put water
and manure from animals into a large tank. This produces gas, methane. A
pipe takes the gas into the house.
Acid rains – what is it?
Acid rains destroy plants, rivers, lakes and buildings. It comes from sulphur
in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulphur dioxide. It is mixed with
water in the air and becomes sulphuric acid.
Acid rain can travel thousand of miles, so pollution in one country can
become acid rain for another country. In Sweden, for example, scientists have
said that 70% of the sulphur in the air comes from other countries, including
Britain.
