"By the way, is Roy expecting us?" "Not exactly," Carly answered trying to avoid
eye contact. "What's that supposed to mean, Carly?" - "Well," she confessed,
"according to Patch, Roy was blind drunk last night, and he was shooting his pistols
and acting crazy. He was outside and everybody else at the ranch stayed inside.
Anyway, Patch phoned Roy's cabin this morning, but Roy didn't answer. Patch said
that he'd go to the cabin and wake Roy but I could tell that the gunshots from the
night before had him a little nervous about calling on Roy."
Carly's father laughed. "So you volunteered me to be shot up by my boyhood
hero?" he said. "How could you do that?"
"It wasn't easy," Carly said smiling ay him, "but I forced myself."
Patch was waiting at the main entrance, and after shaking hands with Avery Martin
he climbed into the car and directed Carly to drive up the long stretch of dusty dirt
road that led to Roy's cabin. As they rode, Patch answered Avery Martin's questions
about Roy's drinking and about his gunplay. Because Patch didn't know much about
guns and because he had been inside during the gunfire he had trouble with the
details, but Carly's father patiently pressed him and managed to conclude that Roy
had been firing a rifle in addition to his pistols.
Patch's eyes immediately darted to Avery Martin who smiled and nodded his head to
indicate that Patch should lay out the facts. "The Duncan family is checking out later
on today," Patch said, "and the Cirelli family left this morning. They both
complained about the shooting last night."
"Well, I sure am making a mess of things," Roy remarked looking toward Avery
Martin, "but I can straighten it out. I've done it before, and I can do it again."
c) Did Avery Martin act as a professional policeman at the scene? Did he use
any tricks of the trade?

walk to the front door probably would have appeared
to be casual, but to Carly it was clear he was exercising some caution. He knocked
and stepped over by the wall to the right of the door getting out of the line of fire and
waiting. Several seconds later a voice called, "Who are you and what do you want?"
Finally the door swung open, and Roy Ranger started through it. He was steadying
the shotgun in his hand when Avery Martin slammed the door into him. The gun
went off and seemed to leap out of Roy's hand at the same time. The roar made Patch
duck for cover, and Carly had to fight the instinctive urge to do the same, keeping her
eyes glued on her father.
Seeing the shotgun fall to the ground in front of him, Avery Martin quickly
slammed his left foot onto the
stock and grabbed Roy Ranger's leather vest
with his right hand pulling the old cowboy toward him. "Just calm down and make
things easy for the both of us," Avery Martin warned.
