No doubt, you have been taught that Type 1 conditionals require the use of
“will”
Ex.: If the weather is nasty on the weekend we will stay at home.
In fact, any modals can be used in Type 1 conditionals to express ability,
possibility, advisability, necessity, etc.
Task: rewrite these sentences using modals (will, may, might, must, ought to,
etc.)
a) If you catch an early train, it’s certain you’ll get to the meeting on time.
b) If you want good accommodation in Brighton, it’s advisable to book in
advance.
c) If you leave here too late, it’s possible you’ll miss the bus.
d) If it’s fine tomorrow, we would be able to go on an excursion.
e) If you want him to succeed, it is advisable to urge him all the time.
f) If you want to spend the weekend here, it’s necessary for you to let me
know in advance.
g) If you don’t want the neighbors to complain, it’s necessary to turn the
music down.
h) If I don’t go to the sales soon, it’s possible I won’t find anything I like.
Many adjectives like verbs are associated with particular prepositions. The
problem is to remember which prepositions. The awareness can only come from
experience.
