Джордж Уоллес (р. 1919) – политический деятель, который несколько раз
избирался губернатором штата Алабама, претендовал на пост президента США в
1972 г. Пытался не допустить интеграцию в школах Алабамы, «встав у школьных
дверей» (to stand at the Schoolhouse door). Считается защитником прав штатов и
расистом . Во время президентской кампании 1972 года на митинге в городе Лорел
(штат Мериленд) на него было совершено покушение, в результате ранения он
был парализован и с тех пор передвигался в коляске. В 1980 был снова избран
губернатором Алабамы.
