     How Computers Help People

     5.1 Study the list of words. Check the pronunciation in your dictionary.
Which words are new to you? Try to memorize them

     to access – if you access information on a computer, you find it using a
     computer
     to advance – if technology advances, it develops and improves
     bug – a small mistake in a computer program that stops it from working
     properly
     to crash (about a computer) – if a computer crashes, it suddenly stops working
     database – a large amount of information stored in a computer system so that
     you can find and use it easily
     e-mail – a system that allows messages to be sent from one computer to
     another, or a message sent using this system
     to be on e-mail (about a computer)
     floppy disk – a small flat thing that you can store information from a computer
     on, that you can remove and use in other computers

     to e-mail – to send someone a message by e-mail
     hard disk – a part inside a computer that permanently stores information and
     instructions
     hardware – computers and all the machinery and equipment connected with
     them
     interactive – interactive programs and activities on a computer are those that
     you do not just read or look at, but which you can change and communicate
     with
     the Internet/the net
     on the Internet
     to surf the net – look at the information on the Internet in order to find
     something that interests you
     to lose work – when the work that you have done on your computer disappears
     and you cannot get it back
     modem – a piece of electronic equipment that allows information to be sent
     from one computer to another
     multimedia – using a mixture of sound, pictures, film and writing to give
     information on computers
     obsolete – if a computer is obsolete, it has become old fashioned and you can
     now get much better ones
     online – online services, conversations, games etc are those that take place or
     exist on the Internet
