Exercise 1. Read the descriptions of the gestures and guess what meanings they have
in America. Compare them with gestures we have in Russia.
1. kissing on the cheek;
2. having hands raised and touching;
3. patting someone on the back;
4. putting an arm around someone;
5. shaking hands with someone;
6. putting your index finger across your throat;
7. hugging someone.
What’s going on here?
A. Read the dialogue below. See if you can guess what the problem was.
MARY ANN: Hello, my name is Mary Ann.
PAULA: Hi, I’m Paula.
MARY ANN: I really like your dress. How much did it cost?
PAULA: Well, I uh, I don’t remember for sure.
MARY ANN: Your shoes are nice too. They look expensive. How much did they
cost? Did you get them on sale?
PAULA: I have to be going now. I’ll see you later.
B. Read the story below, and try to figure out what is going on.
Kristin has bee invited to an American home for a party. She has been in the
United States for only a week , and she is happy that her classmates has invited her
over.
When Kristin arrives at the party, there are very few people there. As she takes
her coat off, she notices her American host talking to a tall man in a brown sweater.
As they speak, Kristin sees her host take one step and then another backward. The
man in the brown sweater then takes two steps forward.
