III. Dating
In the United States, individuals have great freedom and opportunity to meet
others. People from other countries are sometimes shocked to see how Americans
behave. They often go on unsupervised dates in their early teens, share expenses on
dates, and even live together without being married. From what you see on television
and in the movies, you might be led to believe that “anything goes.” This is not the
case, however, because Americans have rules for dating and relationships, even if
they don’t seem apparent. In this chapter, we will discuss the American concept of
dating. You will have the opportunity to compare these concepts with those of
Russia.
1. Dating Across Cultures
Relationships between men and women, boys and girls are different all over the
world. In some countries, families arrange a marriage before the bride and groom
meet; in other countries, the young people select their own male and female friends,
go on dates, and then tell their families whom they wish to marry.
These idioms and expressions will help you understand the dating scene in the
United States. Match the idioms and expressions with their definitions.
1. Double date
2. To share expenses, to go “Dutch treat”
3. Blind date
4. To make a pass, to come on to
someone
5. To go steady, to go with someone
6. To feed someone a line
A. To form a sexual relationship
B. To meet someone (usually with sexual
intent) without having been formally
introduced
