   Peter, an international student who had recently arrived in the United States, liked
a woman in one of his classes, but he didn’t know how to get to know her. He
thought she liked him, too, because whenever their eyes met, she smiled.
   One night she phoned him and asked him for a date. He was very surprised and
said no. He said he was busy, although he really wasn’t. What kind of girl was she to
call him? No girls in his country would do that.
   The next day in class Peter wouldn’t look at her. She came over to him and said,
