V. Attending School
Cultures have developed particular styles of teaching. Therefore, moving from one
country to another to study may present some surprises for students. Though in many
cultures the role of the teacher is to stimulate the students’ thinking, to get them to
ask questions, to challenge – even to argue with – the teacher, and to come to their
own conclusions.
1. Learning About American Schools
Below are the situations in which you may find yourself in the United States. Read
each situation, decide what is appropriate, and choose the answer that best fits the
circumstances. There is more than one possible answer for some of the items.

her attention and say hello. What should you do?

2. You have not done well on a paper, and your professor has called you into his

c. Look up at the ceiling.
d. Focus your eyes on a distant object.
