3. Hand Gestures
Even before people begin to talk, you can tell a great deal about them by
observing their gestures. Gestures can tell about a person’s attitudes, feelings, and
interests. Gestures can have more than one meaning. In fact, they can mean
something totally different from country to country.
Exercise 1. Show the gestures which have the following meanings in Americas and in
Russia, compare them:
1. approval;
2. good, acceptable, or okay;
3. to stop;
4. good luck;
5. victory;
6. “come here”;
7. success;
8. good-bye;
9. “it’s no good”, or failure;
10. “give it to me”;
11. “I don’t know”;
12. you want someone to give you a ride;
13. anger and a desire to hit someone;
14. you want to interrupt to say something;
Exercise 2. Below are examples of idioms related to hand gestures. They are used in
context. Try to use the context to guess the meaning of the idioms.
1. The teacher looked angrily at Steven and told him to hand it over. He reluctantly
gave her the note ha had trying to pass to Jennifer.
2. Jane’s desk is so tidy she has everything she needs right at her fingertips.
