Exercise 4. Read the dialogue and reproduce it
«Hi, Andy, I haven't seen you for ages! Where have you been?»
«Why, I've been to America. I came back only two days ago.»
«I think, you visited New York, didn't you?»
«I am sorry, I didn't, but I was lucky to stay in Washington D.C. for a
fortnight
«Oh, it's great! But why do you say Washington D.C.? What does it mean?»
«D.C. means District of Columbia. You see, when George Washington
picked the place for the capital, he named this piece of land after Christopher Co-
lumbus.»
«I see. Well, what are your impressions of the city? Is it as large as New
York?»
«No, it isn't. It is much smaller but it is very well planned and there are no sky-
scrapers there. The highest building is the Capitol.»
«Where is it located?»
«Just in the center of the city. It is a magnificent building and all the tourists start
their tour about the city from Capitol.»
«What else did you visit there?»
«You know, Americans respect arid honor their great presidents. There are a
lot of monuments to their national heroes. I was impressed by the Washington Memo-
rial. It looks like a pencil. It is 555 foot tall. There is an elevator inside which took us
to the observation platform. The weather was fine and we could enjoy the won-
derful view of Washington lying below.»
