19 Role play. Read the current situation and prepare your role.
Current situation: Your country will vote for a new president today. For the last
eight years the ‘Democratic Left’ party has been in government. They have
traditionally been a left-wing party supported by working class people. The
economy has improved, there is less unemployment, but there is also less job
security. There has also been a rise in terrorist attacks and the government has
put more money into the army and less into education. The main opposition party
is the ‘Conservative Liberals’. They have traditionally been supported by the
middle class and are in favour with the business community. They used to be
quite traditional and conservative but in the last few years they have had a
makeover and they are now trying to appear modern. They support a liberal
economy with little government intervention. They want to privatize education and
the health care system to make both more efficient. The traditional divisions of left
and right are not relevant today, and many think that both the main parties are
actually more in the centre. A third party is becoming popular: the ‘Green Party’.
They are most concerned with the environment ad social issues, as well as the
rise in homelessness and social problems in the last few years.
Election compaign
Role 1: You are the candidate for the Democratic Left. If elected you will continue
to strengthen the economy, and make a country a safer place. Write a short
speech using cohesive devices. Include ideas about the education and health
systems, and anything else that concerns you.
Role 2: You are the candidate for the Conservative Liberals. You think the
government has not done enough to compete with China and India. The economy
is not flexible enough. The education system is not training students for the new
globalised marketplace. The health system is a mess; all the best doctors and
nurses are leaving. Write a speech including other ideas about social issues.
Role 3: You are a journalist for a very popular newspaper that likes scandal. Both
main parties have been accused of corruption. Ask them questions about
corruption in their party, e.g. secret deals, money being spent for personal
reasons, married politicians having affairs with television personalities, etc.
Prepare questions about their opinions on the threat of terrorism and the rise in
crime.
Role 4: You are the member of the public. You are a single mother and think that
there is not enough support for working mothers or for women. Ask about
education and health care for you and your children, and other issues which you
are worried about.
Role 5: You are a candidate for Green Party. People are tired of the two big
political parties, which just fight between themselves, and are corrupt. They are
only concerned about industry and business, not about social issues.
Homelessness, crime and drug-related problems are all rising, while rivers and
lakes are being destroyed. Add more ideas and write a speech.
