ABC OF COMPUTING
LEAD-IN
1
Share information on how you use computers for your studies
and in your free time. Make a list of uses and compare it with other
students.
2 A: Read the information about
The British Computer Society survey.
The British Computer Society
(BCS) has held the research to find out
how familiar the public were with
computers. More than 2,000 adults in
Britain were questioned in the survey for
the BCS. Here are the results.
75% have used a computer at some
stage in their lives
73% used it for the net, e-mail, or word processing
47% use a computer for about 10 hours a week
26% have no access at all to a computer
54% frustrated with complexity of PCs
It concluded that the UK has become a nation of computer buffs, with three-
quarters of adults having used a computer at home or at work.
But this does not mean that the UK had turned into a nation of computer addicts.
Only a third of those questioned use their PC for more than five hours a week,
with an average figure of 10 hours a week.
B: Hold a similar survey in your group. In pairs or in small groups make
up 5-6 questions and interview your group-mates. Analyze the results and
find out if you are a group of computer-buffs, computer addicts, or
computer-phobs.
