21 Work in groups and discuss your opinions. Can your group reach an
agreement? You have 10 minutes to do the task.
a) Are famous people and their family and friends entitled to privacy, or is it
acceptable for the media to publish what it wants about them? Look at these
situations and decide what your opinion is.
b) What rules could be introduced to protect the privacy of famous people? Think
about photographs, articles in the newspapers, their homes, and their friends and
families.
1 A famous fashion model, Kate Warner, makes a lot of extra money by inviting
photographers into her home to take pictures of herself with her new baby. These
photos are published in a popular celebrity magazine. One day she is secretly
photographed while working out in a private gym. Three days later the photos are
published in another magazine without the model’s permission. The model
decides to sue the magazine for publishing photos that invade her private life.
Your verdict: should the magazine have to pay compensation to the model?
2 A famous sports star, Tom Banks, has been charged by the police for injuring a
man when he was involved in a fight in a pub. The man is now in hospital. Banks
claims he was nowhere near the scene of the crime. He is allowed to remain free
until the trial. Forty journalists and photographers wait outside the front and back
doors of his house. They are trying to photograph and speak to the star. The
sports star phones the police complaining he can’t go outside the door of his own
house and his family are getting very upset.
Your verdict: should the police have the power to move the journalists
away?
3 Milly Kaye lives next door to Jamie Lewis, who is a famous pop star in a boy
band. The newspapers keep phoning her up late at night to try and get information
about his new girlfriend, Sam, who presents a pop TV programme for teenagers.
A team of photographers are outside her house every night and she can’t sleep
because of the noise and TV lights. There’s nowhere to park her car at night,
either. Milly usually enjoys reading the newspapers and watching stories about
celebrities on TV, but she has never experienced this behavior by journalists and
photographers before. One day she comes out of the house and loses her temper
with them. She damages their cars and breaks several expensive cameras.
Your verdict: should the newspapers be able to sue Milly for the damage
she did?
