Say what devices can be used to do the following actions. Is
there anything in the list that can be done only with the help of computer?
To play music, to send messages, to type and
print documents, to surf the net, to process data,
to download and store information, to make
graphs, to create images.

Work with a partner. Tell each
other how you use computers for your
studies and in your free time. Make a list of
uses and compare it with other students.
READING
3 You are going to read the article entitled “Computers make the world
smaller and smarter” Before you read do the following tasks. Work in small
groups.
1 Consider the title of the article you’re going to read. Do you think the
adjective “smaller” and “smarter” are used in direct or in figurative meaning? Can
you suggest what the article is about?
2 Computers can do most tasks much faster and more effectively than people.
Is there any kind of intellectual activity in which people are superior to computers?
What is it?
3 “Edutainment” is an abbreviation of two words just like “Oxbridge” is the
abbreviation of “Oxford” and “Cambridge”. Guess the initial words?
4 What can the author mean saying that computers must be used “in a socially
responsible way”?
4 Now read the article. Six paragraphs have been removed from the
article. Choose from paragraphs A- G the one that fits each gap (1-6). There
is one extra paragraph which you needn’t use.
