SPEAKING
21 Discuss in the class.
With television and newspapers, there has always been some government control
and censorship. With the Internet, control is almost impossible. Can you think of
problems or dangers that might come from the freedom of the Internet?
22 Work in groups. Imagine that you were moved by a time-machine in the
early 20-s of the 20
th
century. What might you tell people about the Net? What
advantages of the global network could you talk about? Tell the class about it.
23 Project work. Find out some information about the history of the Internet.
You can consult the book by Peter Buckley “The rough guide to the Internet”. Tell
the class about the early days of the Net.
WRITING
24 Read the letter written to a newspaper advice column. Discuss possible
solutions with a partner and then write a reply to the woman.
Dear Miriam
My husband’s addicted to the Internet. Day and night he chats to an American
woman, sometimes intimately. We’ve been married for 27 years and a few months
ago he told me he would divorce. I found out he’s been sending flowers to this
woman he met on the Internet and he intends to go over and visit her. He’s 50
and all my friends have told me he’s probably going trough a midlife crisis. He
talks all the time to this woman. I know for sure he’s not seeing anyone else, it is
just the Internet that’s got a stranglehold on him.
He’s always been a bully and has threatened that if I did anything to get in touch
with the woman, he’d set our two Alsatian dogs on me. What can I do?
