1 A judge ordered an 82-year-old man to pay $6000 in damages to a burglar who
2 was trying to break into his house. Jack Lewis was being asleep in his house in
3 Lewiston, Idaho when he had heard noises. He picked up his shotgun and went
4 downstairs where he found Michael Phillips in the hall with a bag full of electrical
5 equipment. Phillips claimed that he was unarmed, so then he put the goods
6 down and raised his hands after when he saw the shotgun. Lewis said Phillips
7 had turned to run out of the open front door, so he shot him. Phillips suffered
8 minor wounds to the legs. In the trial, the judge said that despite of the fact that
9 Lewis was defending his own property, it was not acceptable for people to take
10 the law into their own hands. Lewis was charged with of assault with a deadly
weapon.
