files. A 60GB iPod, for example, is the equivalent of roughly 45,000 floppy disks:
enough to back up a huge quantity of documents, emails and photos. And most
digital music players can also function as personal organizers - with electronic
diaries, address hooks, musical alarm clocks, and so on - and even Dictaphones.

Some models - including the iPod photo - also allow you to display photos, either
on the device's small colour screen or on a TV screen via a cable. So you can
have all your digital photo albums with you at all nines, as well as all your music
(a mixed blessing for friends and relatives, admittedly).

Furthermore, digital music players can play audio books and other spoken-
word recordings. Their large capacity makes it practical to store entire texts so
yon don't have to make do with the hatchet-job abridgements typically found on
cassettes and CDs. And that's not all. Here are a few other things you can do
with an iPod, some of which require a third-party accessory... Record voice
memos, read news and email on the train, use an iPod as a universal remote control,
download photos direct from your camera, navigate the road network, Interrupt an
FM radio signal with a DIY newsflash, deliver a PowerPoint presentation,
automatically backup key files, play a few built-in games, make a flipbook movie,
listen to poetry, shave off your beard.

The storing capacity of iPod depends on the model you buy, the sound quality you
desire and - obviously - the size of your collection. The top-of-the-range iPod at
the time of writing is capable of storing around 1300 albums at a sound quality
that will satisfy most people: that's enough music to play day and night for more
than a month without repeating a single track. So, assuming you own less music
than that, you don't insist on super-high fidelity, and you're prepared to pay for a
suitably capacious model, then yes, an iPod can hold your whole music collection.
However, it's worth bearing in mind that in practice you also need the same amount
of space available on the hard drive of your computer, since whatever is on your
iPod will typically also live on your PC or Mac...
