Trials to assess how effectively the robot could plan (6) ____ showed that its
performance was not significantly different from that of a group of human scientists.
Mike Young, director of biological sciences at the University of Wales, was one of
the human (7) ___. "The robot did beat me," he admits, "but only because I hit the
wrong (8) _____ at one point in the test."
Chrisley's only concern is that a laboratory full of (9) ___ could easily
dismiss 'failed' experiments that may open up interesting new lines of enquiry.
"Throughout the history of science we've seen that mistakes can lead to great (10)
___," he says.

VIRTUAL REALITY
Getting practical
Here are some (1) ____ APPLY of virtual reality under development.
Wearing head mounts, consumers can browse for products in a Virtual
showroom'. From a remote (2) ____ LOCATE a consumer will be able to
manoeuvre and view products along rows in a warehouse. (3) _____ SIMILAR,
from a convenient office a security guard can patrol corridors and offices in
remote locations.
Air traffic controllers may some day work like this. Microlaser scanner
glasses project computer-generated images directly into the controller's eyes, (4)
______ IMMERSE controller in a three-dimensional scene showing all the aircraft
in the area. To establish voice contact with the pilot of the plane, the controller (5)
_______ MERE touches the plane's image with a sensor-equipped glove.
Using virtual reality headsets and gloves, doctors and medical students will be
able to experiment with new procedures on (6) ______ SIMULATE patients rather
than real ones.

WHAT IS A MICRO-MACHINE?
One of the most important steps in the computing (1) ___ in coming years is
likely to be a return to mechanical (2) ___. Using the same process used to (3)
___ chips, it's possible to fabricate mechanical parts - levers, gear wheels, and
small motors.
The best (4) ____ example of a micro-machine was created by Sandia
Laboratories New Mexico in the US. It's a complete motor developing 50 mW of
(5) ____ in the square millimeter - still a bit big (6) ____ some of the micro-
machines planned for the future.
What are micro-machines going to be used for? Obvious (7) ____ are
sensors, gyros and drug delivery. The idea is that a micro-machine could have a
strain sensor or a gyroscopic attitude sensor and electronics (8) ___ into a single
chip-sized package. The idea of using a micro-machine to deliver drugs is getting
a bit closer to more sci-fi applications. Only a step further is the (9) ___ of building
insect-sized robots that could do difficult jobs in very small places. Swallowing an
ant-sized (10) ___ to cure you or putting one inside some failed machinery seems
like a really good idea!
