      1. It turned out that the particles of the «positive» rays could
easily pass through matter.

earth tidal force, therefore they also involve an external influence.
      10. By the 1890’s physicists seemed to have shown conclusively that
the earth couldn’t have been solid for more than a few million years.
      11. Geologists and biologists seemed to have proved just as con-
clusively that the earth must have been solid for not less than a
billion years.
