XHIBITION IN BRISBANE
The 7
th
International Heavy Haul Conference and AusRail 2001 (IHHA) took place
in Brisbane, Australia.
The highly specialized nature of the IHHA conference was shown in topics such as
vehicle-track, and wheel-rail interaction; track, vehicle, and bogie design; track and vehi-
cle maintenance; improving rails and rail welding; and track grinding.
Centrepiece of the main exhibition hall at the Brisbane Exhibition Center was a
Plasser 09-2X Tamping Express. This high-capacity, two-sleeper continuous action tam-
per is capable of tamping 1600m of track an hour. After the show, the machine was deliv-
ered to Robe River Iron Associates for track construction for the new West Angelas iron
ore mine.
The outdoor display at Roma street station featured Plasser Australia’s RM900-QR
ballast cleaning machine, the largest single track maintenance machine ever manufactured
in Australia for Queensland Railways (QR) 1067mm-gauge network; it is also the first and
only narrow-gauge RM900 in the world. After the show, the 90m-long machine was
commissioned on heavy haul coal lines in central Queensalnd. QR took delivery of a
Plasser 09-3X three-sleeper continuous action tamper – with an output of more than
2000m an hour – to work behind the RM 900-QR to quickly restore track ready for traffic.
Harsco Track Technologies featured the Stoneblower track surfacing machine de-
veloped principally by the former British Rail Research and the Harsco subsidiary, Jack-
son. Thirteen Stoneblowers are currently in operation in Britain where experience shows
that track geometry corrected by the machine lasts at least three times longer than with
conventional tamping.
The main advantages of the Stoneblower are that it treats only sleepers that need
treatment, it damages ballast much less than tamping, eliminates the need for dynamic
track stabilizing, and reduces the need for ballast regulating and ballast cleaning.
Pandrol displayed its popular Fastclip that had been selected as the fastener for
use on the new Alice Springs-Darwin line. Fastclip offers easy and fast installation, re-
duced maintenance, and durability of components in track. Austrak NT, a subsidiary of
Barclay Mowlem, Brisbane, has the contract to manufacture 2 million prestressed concrete
sleepers for the project.
General & Railway Supplies, Australia, presented its unique Rex-Lok rail fasten-
ing system in which one clip is suitable for use on any size of rail on any sleeper material.
The simple design clip has been introduced on high-density mass transit lines in the United
States and on heavy haul main lines in the United States and Australia.
