should have happened in England, and to a lesser extent in Scotland,

ROMAN CONQUEST AND OCCUPATION
Ceasar’s two invasions were a little more than
reconnaissances
in force. The first was made in the
summer of 55 B.C. The second invasion was an actual
invasion, conquest of Britain. During this period a
thorough economic penetration of South-East Britain
went on. It marked the growth of trade and towns.
The Roman occupation of Britain lasted nearly
400 years. Certainly, Roman conquest and the Latin
language and the Roman mode of production affected
to some extent the life of the Britons, but those effects
were not so much permanent. And, finally, Christian-
ity, introduced by the legions, remained the religion of
those parts of Britain which escaped the English con-
quest, penetrated thence to Ireland.
