Balanced Turbocharger and Engine
Correct turbocharging is of the utmost importance because the diesel engine, in
its modern form, long ago ceased to be a simple reciprocating machine. Today it is
combined with a gas turbine which utilizes the exhaust gas energy and feeds
compression to the engine. In this symbiosis between an engine and turbocharger
the diesel engine uses that part of the energy that has a high pressure and
temperature, but small volume, and the gas turbine uses the part with low pressure,
low temperature, but large volume.
At the present stage of development, the turbocharger’s air blower compresses
the aspirated air to approximately 3kg/cm
2
at 170
0
C. The air is then cooled to 45
0
C
in an air cooler and conducted to the inlet valves of engine. The piston then
compresses the air further to 80kg/cm
2
and 800
0
C. During the subsequent
combustion process the pressure rises to over 120kg/cm
2
and the temperature to over
1500
0
C. No comparable thermodynamic machine exists which can take and process
such a high energy difference and with an overall efficiency of more than 40 per
cent.
With pulse pressure charging the different cylinder exhaust nozzles are combined
in such a way so as to provide a uniform and close succession of pressure of waves
to the turbine without scavenging of the cylinders being impeded by these pressure
waves. Three-pulse and four-pulse pressure charging are mainly used today. With
the former, three cylinder are combined in an exhaust manifold in such a way that
their firing is staggered by a crank angle of 240
0
. In the second version four
cylinders fire at interval of 180
0
. Cylinder groups of 6,9 and 12 are suitable for the
three-pulse combination and cylinder groups of 8 and 16 for the four-pulse
combination.
