VOCABULARY
1. pick (v) - 1) выбирать, отбирать: It was difficult for him to pick neces-
sary words. 2) искать: She picks a quarrel with me. 3) обворовывать: He peaks
and steals. to pick at – придираться; to pick up - поднимать; заезжать; to
pick up flesh пополнеть; to have a bone to pick with smb - иметь счеты с
кем-либо.
pick (n) - выбор: He took his pick that year.
2. language (n) - язык: I don't know this language.
Syn. tongue (mother tongue - родной язык). slang – сленг, jargon -
жаргон, профессиональный жаргон, dialect – диалект, bilingual - человек,
владеющий двумя языками.
3. get (v) - 1) получать: We can get all the money we wanted. 2) до-
ставлять: Get me a chair. 3) прибывать: We can get to Moscow in an hour.
4) понимать: I don't get you. 5) становиться: We are getting old. to get at –
достичь: We should get at the station at 5 p.m. to get by – удаваться: As far as
I know she is not poor, she got by. to get off – слезть: It is dangerous to stay
there. Get off! to get on - делать успехи: She studied English thoroughly and
got on. to get round – обмануть: I don't want you to be got round by. to get to-
gether – встречаться: I haven't seen you for ages. Let's get together and have
some coffee. to get on smb's nerves - действовать на нервы: She gets on my
nerves every day. to get the gate (mitten) - быть уволенным: He was a bad
worker and got the gate at last. to get off with a whole skin - выйти сухим из
воды: She will always get off with a whole skin and her husband as well.
4. put (v) - 1) класть, положить: You should put my books into the book-
shelf. 2) помещать: He is a killer and should be put to prison. 3) выражать: You
must put your words in black and white. 4) приводить: It is so messy here, put
your things in order. to put away - убирать: There is no place left on the table.
Put unnecessary papers away. to put down - записывать: This information is
very important. I'd like to put it down. to put in вставлять: Put in the stick into
the holes to force the insects out. to put up with – мириться: I can't put up with
her behaviour anymore.
5. run (v) - 1) бежать, двигаться: You must run fast to win the game.
2) быстро распространяться: Bad news runs fast. 3) управлять: It's high time
for you to run the business. 4) вращаться: Leave the engine running, I'll be back
in a minute. 5) быть действительным: The lease runs for 5 years. to run about
- суетиться: Stop running about! to run across - натолкнуться: We ran across
the boss when we were hurrying to the meeting. to run away with - потерять
самообладание: His tamper ran away with him. to run down - унижать: You
can tell her that she is wrong but don't run her down. to run on - продолжать:
They were very tired but ran on in spite of all difficulties. to run out of - исто-
щить: We ran out of petrol and had to stop. to run through - промотать со-
стояние: She was left a fortune, but ran it through. to run a risk - рисковать:
Let's find another way out, I don't want to run a risk. to run errands - быть на
посылках: You are 30, but still run errands.
