VOCABULARY
1. call (n) - 1) зов, отклик: Can you hear her call? 2) призыв, сигнал, те-
лефонный вызов: There was only one call for me. 3) визит, посещение: It will
be nice to pay her a call. 4) нужда: You have no call to blush.
call (v) - 1) звать, окликать: In case of her coming call me. 2) вызывать,
призывать: Don't forget to call her attention to the issue. 3) заходить: The ship
is due to call at port at 5 p.m. 4) считать: I call this a good house. to call for -
требовать: The situation called for drastic measures. to call off - отменять: The
game was called off. to call out - вызывать: In summer he was called out for
training. to call up - звать наверх: She is on the first floor. Let's call her up.
2. charge (n) – 1) заряд: The charge of this gun can easily kill a person.
2) нагрузка, бремя: I can’t stand this charge any more, I’d like to get rid of it.
3) забота, надзор: Our children are in charge of a nurse. 4) лицо, состоящее на
попечении: She worried a lot about her little charges. 5) обязанность, ответст-
венность: I am in charge of this department.
charge (v) – 1) заряжать: You have to charge the gun every 10 minutes.
2) нагружать: I charged my mule with all my things. 3) поручать, вверять: I
charged your wife with an important mission. 4) назначать цену: They charged
us 10$ for it. 5) обвинять: He was charged with murder.
3. employ (n) - служба: I was in the employ of this man for 3 years.
employ (v) - 1) держать на службе: The new road will employ hundreds of
men. 2) занимать чье-либо время: How do you employ yourself in the evening?
employer (n) - предприниматель: I must listen to him. He is my employer.
employee (n) - наниматель, работодатель: My employees went on a
strike and the factory doesn't work.
employment (n) - работа, занятие: She is a good specialist but out of em-
ployment now.
4. go (v) – 1) идти: The train goes to London. 2) ехать путешествовать:
She went to France by train. 3) приводить в движение: The engine goes by
electricity. 4) простираться: How far does the road go? 5) окончиться: How did
the vote go? 6) потерпеть крах, рухнуть: The bank may go every day.
7) переходить в собственность: The house went to my brother. 8) подходить:
The blue scarf goes well with this blouse. to go about – расхаживать туда и
сюда: When I saw him he was going about the street. to go against – противо-
речить: Your actions go against your words. to go down – спускаться: It was
bad to go down in the world. to go in for – увлекаться: She decided to go in for
gymnastics. to go on – продолжать: She had an opportunity to go on. to go
with – гармонировать: Your blouse doesn’t go with the trousers. to go without
– обходиться без чего-либо: I am sorry but I can’t go without smoking. to go on
a strike- бастовать: We should go on a strike to protect our rights.
5. spoil (n) – 1) добыча (pl): All these things are the spoils of war.
2) прибыль, выгода: This deal brought us a lot of spoil.
spoil (v) – 1) портить: She shouldn’t have come. She spoilt the party.
2) баловать: They spoilt their only child a lot.
spoilt (a) - избалованный, испорченный: The spoilt child of nature.
