LAND ROVER’S FREELANDER
Land Rover has only slightly less ambitious plans for the Freelander, just
its seventh all-new vehicle in 53 years. The small but fierce sport-utility vehicle
"has
’
been on sale in Europe since 1997 and is now headed stateside in
December saddled with the big job of stamping the brand’s Serengeti-ready
image on a less rugged and less expensive vehicle. At a projected volume of
20,000 sales per year in North America, the Freelander is also charged with
nearly doubling the franchise’s business in Canada and the United States. "What
you’re driving is our attempt at stretching the brand," explains Paul Ferraiolo,
who is Land Rover’s product planner for North America.
Ferraiolo and the company want prospective buyers to look past the
Freelander’s suspiciously carlike specifications to see a vehicle worthy of the
Land Rover badge. Those specs include a unitized steel body, a strut-type
suspension with steel control arms: a transverse front-drive configuration and a
no-low-range four-wheel-drive system that relies on a viscous coupling rather
than stout gears to transfer torque. It plies the coarse bituminous roads of Iceland
with a more fundamentally stable chassis than that of any other Land Rover,
dispatching corners with well-damped body roll and resolute turn-in. The struts
offer enough compliance and the body enough rigidity to sponge up washboards,
but pits and potholes telegraph considerable rattle to the chops. Even so, the
3650-pound Freelander rides more like a European car and less like an
agricultural implement than any other Land Rover ever.
The 2.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V-6 with five-speed Jatco automatic is the
aluminum powerplant for the Rover 75 sedan and was chosen because the
European stable of four-cylinders and diesels won't cut it in America. The 174
horsepower and 1 77 pound- feet of torque are made possible with dual-length
intake runners but not variable valve timing or other widgetology. They are
expected to trot the Freelander to 60 mph in a circumspect 10.9 , seconds. In
sport or manual-shift mode, the powertrain supplied just enough verve for brisk
touring.
The combination of a viscous center torque coupling, open differentials
front and rear, and just 7.2 inches of ground clearance would have raised the
Welsh dander of Land Rover godfather Maurice Wilks. But a brake-based
traction-control system does keep things moving by selectively applying the
brakes to shift the torque from spinning to laden wheels, at least until the brakes
get too hot and the system has to take a breather. On dry roads, the drive line
pipes 95 percent of post-transmission torque to the front axle.
