BIODIVERSITY
A community is a group of individuals of different species, each with
its own niche or way of using available resources to sustain itself. The spe-
cies that live in a community are those that can survive in the environmental
conditions. Only a limited number of species are adapted to each unique set
of circumstances that a community can offer. For this reason, patterns of
similar groups of species recur in communities with similar characteristics.
The richness of species in a community is referred to as biodiversity,
the variety of life-forms. No one knows for sure how many species of organ-
isms inhabit Earth. The most common living things are very small and diffi-
cult to quantify. Scientists estimate that there are 5 to 30 million different
kinds of organisms alive – less than 2 million have been identified and
named.
