Besides the Universities there are other institutions such as
Polytechnics and Technical Colleges. These tend to offer courses of
vocational nature as well as academic courses. Colleges of Education
provide training and education for prospective teachers.
The vast majority of students receive grants from their Local
Authority, which cover tuition fees and allow a certain amount of
money to the students to pay for their keep and their books.
The Academic Year has three terms; it starts in October, each
term lasting eight weeks at Oxford and Cambridge, or ten weeks at
other universities.
Students have vocations at Christmas, at Easter, and the so-
called «Long Vac» in summer.
At the end of three years’ study the undergraduates take their
first degree — Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc).
