1. Do you remember times when you argued with other children in your family?
What sort of things did you squabble about? How were these arguments re-
solved?

2. Listen to two friends discussing their relationships with brothers and sisters
during childhood and later life. As you listen, complete the sentences below with
an appropriate word or short phrase. The first example has been done for you.
Dave has (1) one sister who is about four years (2) ........... than him. When they were
children, Dave felt that he often ended up getting (3) .......... because of her. The biggest
problems in their relationship occurred when they were (4) .......... . Dave thought his sis-
ter was rather (5) .......... and he took the side of his (6) ............ . Eventually, Dave de-
cided to (7) .......... . Today Dave and his sister see (8) .......... of each other and they get
on (9) .......... .
Celia has two sisters and she is the (10) .......... of the three. As a child, she remembers

- confirm their own understanding

4. Practise saying the phrases you noted in the previous activity aloud to a part-
ner.
5. Discuss how your own relationships with other children changed as you grew
older.
