The good journalist is not only curious about what is taking place around
him, he is interested in what is happening in the world.
He should be a great reader of newspapers himself. And not only a great
reader of newspapers but a glutton for picking up information on everything he
can. It is sometimes said that if you are a journalist it helps to know a good deal
about one or two things, but that what is absolutely essential is that you should
know a little about a lot.
To know a good deal about one or two things is important, especially if
later on you want to specialise. But to know a little about a lot of things, by
which I mean enough to carry on a conversation and show an intelligent interest
to people who know more than you do, this is very necessary.
You must like writing and be good at writing. It is essential that you should
be able to write simply and lucidly, with a vivid phrase when one is called for,
and that you should, be able to write quickly.
You must be able to write in such a way that many people who do not, per-
haps, spend much time reading books will be able to read what you say and un-
derstand it and find it interesting. You must be able to explain what you want to
say in such a manner as to avoid misunderstanding.
By the nature of his job the journalists must turn his hand to many things
and write about many different subjects so he heeds to teach himself. If you are
a reporter you may have to listen to a long speech and compress what is essen-
tial in it into a few paragraphs. Or you may be given a complicated official re-
port or a document concerned with some Local Government matter and must
have taught yourself to go through it quickly with an eye for what is important
so that you can extract what is essential and express it simply.
What other qualities do you need? Well, you need a good deal of self reli-
ance and push and energy and initiative.
You must not be the sort of person who is easily rebuffed or who easily
gets downhearted. You must keep on trying to get the story even when circum-
stances seem to be against you, when, for example, the person you want to see
has left ten minutes before you arrived and nobody knows where he has gone or
when he will be back.
Physically also you need to be fairly tough. On many occasions you may
have to go long past normal meal times, you may have to be out in all kinds of
weatner, and you will often have to work at considerable speed. It is no good go-
ing into journalism if you are the sort of person who gets easily tired.
