1. Churchill did not cause the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe: that was
unstoppable once the German army was crushed. Churchill was not larger than
the historical forces he confronted. The sea was not Canute’s fault.
2. The myth of clean-cut GIs fighting clean John Wayne-esque wars died on March
16, 1968, when Lieut. William Calley and members of Charlie Company ran
amok in the Vietnamese village of My Lai, slaughtering more than 500 unarmed
civilians, mostly elderly people, women and children.
3. Once a year the Lord Mayor of London invites top financiers to the “City
Banquet” at Mansion House, his official home. It is one of many opulent
functions hosted by a Gilbert-and-Sullivan-sounding figure whose grand title

embedded in the national psyche; America seems to regard it with despair as a
price of economic success.
5. The great restaurant boom that began in the nineties but fizzled out at the
beginning of the new millennium has exploded all over again. Overnight, the
meatpacking district has blown up into a chaotic gastronomic version of
Bourbon Street. Grand old French restaurants have been replaced by baroque
new corporate venues, extravagant wine bars, and Pan-Asian food places as big
as bus depots. (New York, Jan. 3, 2005)
6. After the death of Charles I in 1649 puritanical attitudes to the visual arts did not
favour the development of architecture and the destruction, begun under
Henry VIII, was renewed during and after Civil War (1642-1646). Whatever the
merits of government under Cromwell, it was a sad period for architecture.
7. Animals also throw up historical «what-ifs». What if Richard III had traded his
kingdom for a horse, Dick Whittington not been so bounteous with his cat, or
Catherine the Great been less pony crazy? In the multimedia age pets can win
the ultimate prizes and emerge as global megastars. The orbit of Sputniks dog,
Laika, made him the fantasy comrade of the worlds youth.

THE KING IS DEAD (The Times, FEB 06, 2002)
Accession is the defining moment of monarchy. In centuries past, there would
be no more dangerous moment for a Royal House than when the Crown passed from
one Sovereign to another. The succession was often contested or the new monarch
placed on a period of probation. What may be thought of now as the «normal» course
