       Computers make it possible to conduct experiments and take measurements
in places that cannot be reached or visited by man. For example, computers are
very good at watching what is happening inside a nuclear reactor or what the
conditions are below the surface of the ocean. Computers are known to have been
placed on the moon and deep into the earth, into caves and mines1. They sent back
pictures of Saturn and Jupiter and maps of the earth taken from satellites.
       Computers play a great role in industrial automation. They take over many
monotonous operations so that people could perform more interesting and creative
jobs. At a factory computers keep track2 of the manufacturing processes and feed
instructions into the control equipment. Computers make it possible to control
machines without human supervision. Computerisation happened to have become
an essential element in full automation of industrial processes.
       The third major use of computers is to provide mathematical models of
situations as the basis for research and economic planning. A lot of scientific and
engineering problems which might occupy mathematicians for weeks are solved by
a computer in a few minutes.
Computers can be designed for specific purposes, such as guiding aircraft flights,
keeping bank accounts, playing chess. They make weather forecast more accurate
by quick analysis of complex starting data. Computers are of great importance in
modern medicine. They sort and store medical information that has been acquired
for the last 50 years. A doctor may consult the computer while making a diagnosis
and prescribing a treatment3.
      Computers continue to penetrate various spheres of human life and activities.
