ROBOTS IN OUR LIFE
The use of robots is spreading in all countries. Robots can perform an almost
infinite variety of tasks. Being faster and more accurate than the man when working
robots replace him in carrying out monotonous and dangerous work.
Space research opens up vast perspectives for robots. They could be left in
orbit forever or sent off to explore some remote area without anyone worrying
about whether it would come back or not. They are also very useful for repairing
the outside of a spaceship or for assembling а space station in orbit. The Russian
and American scientists have different versions of robot space explorers. After
landing on the planet the scientists send them radio commands to take samples of
the soil, analyse them, perform some experiments and take pictures of the planet
surface.
Robots' playing an important part in industry is well-known. There are plants
consisting of advanced industrial robots where the entire production process is run
by a computer with only some technicians supervising their work. And even more
intelligent industrial robots appear every year.
Robots that have a little independence of their own are becoming more and
more common in offices and hospitals. There is a robot-cart which can work as a
mechanical errand-boy

. The cart can call its own elevator, get off at the
appropriate floor and go where it is needed. It is guided by a wire track
2
in the floor
or by using specialized "eyes" to follow a white line on the floor.
Yet scientists point out that there is a limit to robots' capabilities. Anything
requiring creative thinking or emotions cannot be expected of robots. These will
remain the exclusive spheres of humans.
