Great Britain
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is often called
England. Great Britain is an island in Western Europe. Its area is 244,000 square
kilometers, its population is about 56 million inhabitants. The whole Kingdom
consists of the British mainland, the northern part of the neighboring island Ireland
and 5,500 small islands. In the south the English Channel and the Strait of Dover
divide England from France.
To the east of England there is the North Sea, and in the west it is divided from
Ireland by the Irish Sea and St. George Strait. In administrative-political divisions
Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great
Britain has a long coast line with many good harbors for ships. The longest river in
Great Britain is the Severn. It is in the south-west of England. The mountains are
almost all in the Western side and they are not very high. There are many low hills in
some parts of the country. The greater part of the land is flat, so farmers can grow
corn, vegetables and fruits.
Great Britain is one of the greatest countries with a high level of industry
development. The coal-mining industry plays a very important role, mechanical
engineering and the wool industry also take place on a great scale. In the so called
"new" branches of industry such as chemical, automobile, electro technical and
aviation there are great monopolies. Centers of mechanical engineering are Glasgow,
Newcastle, Belfast and Lancashire. The chemical industry is concentrated in such
centers as Manchester and Liverpool.
Its capital is London, one of the largest cities of the world. It lies on the both
sides of the river Thames. You get there from the continent by air or by or by train,
through the channel tunnel. Those who come by sea go up the Thames as far as
London Bridge. This bridge is 600 years old.
Londoners are proud of their parks and gardens. Of all London parks. Hyde
Park is the most interesting and beautiful. Hyde Park is also a place of workers'
demonstrations and different meetings.
Anybody walking around London meets 2 parts of the city. The West End is
the richest part of London. It is the heart of the business city. Trafalgar Square is
