Museum. The Museum as we know it today is the result of the labour and enthusiasm
of six generations of scholars and collectors. It owes its origin to Sir Hans Sloane, a
native of Ireland who practised as a physician. He died in 1753, giving to the nation a
valuable collection of books, manuscripts and works of art. A magnificent building
was purchased to house the collections, and was opened to the public in 1759 under
the title of the British Museum.
2. In 1823 the Museum acquired the library of George III, containing some
120,000 volumes. At the time the public was informed that this was a gift from
George IV. Such was not the case. The king, far from having any idea of giving the
library to the nation, wanted to sell it abroad. Fortunately he was prevented from
carrying out this project, and the books were bought of him and so secured for the
nation. The Reading Room, 140 feet in diameter and 106 feet high, is one of the
largest in the world. It has accommodation for some 500 readers, and the shelves
round the walls contain over 800,000 volumes. No one knows the exact number of
books in the library, but it certainly exceeds 4,000,000 and increases at the rate of
about 50,000 every twelve months. The volumes occupy well over sixty miles of
shelving. Specially trained workers are compiling a new catalogue, which will
probably take a quarter of a century to complete. The new catalogue will be in some
500 volumes.
3. Countless outstanding people have made use of the Reading Room. There
the famous playwright, Bernard Shaw, educated himself by five years' reading, while
Samuel Butler, the great English poet-satirist,sat at a desk for a quarter of a century.
