is believed to be one of the largest collections of aeronautical literature in the world.
An increasing collection of materials on microfilm is available for use in the Library
Microfilm Reading Room. The collection includes microfilmed copies of
manuscripts, books dating back to the beginning of printing, and works in almost
every known language and subject. Special reading machines are provided for the use
of readers.
2. The Library exists primarily to serve members of Congress and other
officers of the Government. Beforehand it had been housed in the Capitol but in the
end of the 19th century it was transferred to a building of its own. Now books are
conveyed to the Capitol by a high-speed cable underground. The Library collections
and services are also available to other libraries, scholars, and the general public. It
has 21 general and special reading rooms where persons may consult any material,
and may receive reference aid from trained assistants. A special catalogue records the
location of books of research value in over 700 libraries in the U. S. and Canada.
3. In the main reading room hundreds of reading desks are arranged in
concentric circles about the central raised distributing desk. The latter is the nerve
centre in the complex functioning system of the Library. Here are the pneumatic
tubes which carry call slips to the bookstack attendants, and a receptacle to receive
books brought by endless chains from the stacks. About 20 minutes should be
allowed for delivery of a book. A limited number of study rooms and study tables, as
well as special book-shelves, are available for persons conducting scholarly research.
