THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
1. To the stranger, who asks where is the University, the Cambridge resident
has usually found it difficult to reply. It can be said that its centre is in its oldest
buildings dating from the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, which to-day house its
administrative headquarters. For centuries these buildings met University's needs. But
the past 100 years have seen a rapid growth of other buildings—libraries, museums,
lecture-rooms, and scientific laboratories—and the process is still continuing. So the
University is to be found throughout central Cambridge and is now expanding
westwards across the river Cam.
2. The first College was founded in 1284. Previously students had lived in
lodgings, but in the course of time residence in Cambridge, normally for two or three
years, has become one of its essential conditions.
In addition to the promotion of research, the main functions of the University
are to provide teaching through the faculties, to conduct University examinations, and
to award degrees to those who have qualified to receive them.
3. To-day the Chancellor masters and scholars are a body of over 65,000
persons. The main library of the University is one of the largest in England, and
entitled to a copy of every book published in the country. Important works are
regularly published by the Cambridge University Press.
