4. Colleges are organized societies independent of the University, although
incorporated in it. They are self-governing, that is, they have their own laws and their
own rules for internal government. All the members of the University, both graduate
and undergraduate, are members of Colleges and admission to the University is to be
effected through the Colleges. There are twenty-one colleges, eighteen for men and
three for women. The College officers consist of the Head, Dean and Fellows.
5. A College is, of course, far more than a place of residence, it is in a real
sense a community. This is particularly true of the undergraduate, for whom his
college provides a home, advice about his University career, supervision, and most of
his social life. Side by side with the University, the College plays an important part in
both teaching and research.
