Task 4: translate the following passage; find the case of Conditional in it and
explain it.
Nancy screamed in horror pushing Carly aside and jumping out of the van. She
ran to the end of the driveway with Carly in rapid pursuit. "Oh, no!" she said
screaming again as she looked up and down the street. "He took them! That crazy
took them!"
Nancy fell into
arms sobbing like a baby. "Hey," Carly commanded, "get
hold of yourself. Was it Wilbur Sims who took the boys?"
Hearing
name sent Nancy out of control again. Finally she stopped her
sobbing, and after coughing hard for several seconds she said, "Yes, it was Wilbur,
but how do you -
"I found out on my own," Carly interrupted, "and if you had been honest about
him, maybe we wouldn't be in this situation now."
CHAPTER 22
Task
read the chapter and translate it through. I hope you're really curious
about it.
Task
consider the answers to the following questions.
a) Did Carly manage to handle the situation with missing Copter in front of
Ruth? Was she smart about it? Do you think
rather tell the truth both
of women right away?
b) Anyway, she had to do a lot of explaining to Bella. In what way did Bella
respond to it? Did she blame Carly for everything that had happened or did
she try to play to her rules?
c) Did Carly sense the seriousness of the situation? What did she consider the
number-one priority ay that moment?
Translate the following passage thoroughly paying attention to the Modal
Verbs.
"Carly was beginning to feel quite frightened - especially for Ruth. For one thing
the Chutes could easily reconsider and decide to call the police anytime they wanted,
and no one could stop them. For another Avery Martin didn't believe in working
outside the law and probably wouldn't do it for very long. And finally Wilbur Sims
might want attention, and could very well call the TV stations and newspapers on his
own."
Task
in one of the tasks to the previous chapter you were asked to consider
why Wilbur Sims had changed so much. Now this chapter gives a clear explanation
how he has turned from a friendly easygoing person into his own worst enemy. Go
over these passages once again to understand better the way the man had gone since
the accident.
