The American economy is described as a free enterprise system that allows
private business the freedom to operate for profit with minimum government
regulations and help.
The theoretical foundation of the American economic system was provided by
Adam Smith, the eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher, whose economic ideas had
a strong influence on the development of capitalism. According to Smith, the result is
good for all when any individual is allowed to gain profit freely. He must be
motivated by self - interest. The more people manufacture and trade, the greater is the
competition.
