After inventing dynamite, Swedish born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man.
Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just
two weeks before his death, he created a fund for giving prizes to those who made
great contributions to people. Originally, there were five prizes: in literature, in
physics, in chemistry, in medicine and in peace. Economics was added in 1968 just
sixty-seven years after the first prize giving ceremony.
Nobel’s original nine million were invested and the interest on this sum is used
for the prizes which vary in money from 10000 to 125000 dollars.
