Well, I had a bad trick of
standing before the fire and so
I burnt my frocks and I
scorched this one and though
its nicely mended it shows
and Meg told me to keep still
so that no one would see it.
You may laugh too if you
want it. Its funny, I know.
Im not laughing, Miss Joe.
Never mind the burn. Ill tell
you how we can manage.
There is a long hall out there.
We can chance grandly and no
one will see it. Please, come.
Oh, thank you. Thank you,
Lorrie.

Well, hows married life ?
Its all right, I suppose, but
But what?
Its my mother-in-law! Before
we got married David thought
I was perfect! Now we’re mar-
ried, his mother, according to
him, is better at everything.
And shes always ringing me
up, telling me what to do.
Oh dear! Like what?
Apparently, shes a better
cook than I am she never
burns the frozen peas! She
gets up earlier than me and

breakfast was always on the
table waiting for David. When
we go out, I take much longer
than she does to get ready, and
shes also better at entertain-
ing than I am; she tells funnier
stories, shes more polite,
shes cleverer, more interest-
ing
Oh Lord! It sounds as if
youve got a problem. Why
dont you just tell her what
you think?
Thats just it. When she
phones me, she sounds
sweeter than sugar and she
goes on and on its really
difficult, you know, to get a
word in edgeways. And with
David going on about how
wonderful she is, Im sure he
loves her more than me.
Well, if I were you, Id

Im sorry Im so late there
was an awful traffic jam
That doesnt matter. So, what
was your general feeling
about the course?
Well, er, I thought it was OK
and being in Spain certainly
did a lot for my conversa-
tional Spanish … but
What about the school?

I didnt speak enough in class,
the teacher talked all the time
and several of the students
were better than me, so I
didnt like to say too much in
case I made mistakes and
looked stupid. Also, we were
a pretty big group so it was
virtually impossible for all of
us to speak during the lesson.
Um, I see. What did you actu-
ally learn?
I learnt all sorts of things
loads of grammar, things like
past participles and tenses, that
sort of thing. I found that very
helpful. But, basically, I didnt
really feel I learnt anything
there that I couldnt have done
on my own at home.
Im very sorry. We didnt
know that the classes were so
large. The company spent a
lot of money sending you on
the course
Well, it wasnt a complete
waste of time. I did get out
quite a bit in the evenings and
had some fantastic food. I put
on five kilos. In fact, Ive got
to start a diet to lose some of
it!
Well, at least you gained
something from your trip!

Have you heard the latest
news? They’re going to hold
an open air concert in Shet-
ford to collect money for a
childrens charity.
Oh? I heard it was all off.
They were going to hold it
here, but so many local peo-
ple complained about it that
they’re going to find some-
where else.
No! What are they complain-
ing about? Its all in a good
cause, collecting money for
children in need. What is
there to complain about?
Plenty. They were going to
hold it in the field by the
river. Thats very close to
peoples houses. The noise
would be unbearable. And
think of the mess, all that lit-
ter, the car parking prob-
lems…
Just a minute, how can you
be so petty minded? The vast
majority of people would
love it. There were going to
be some great musicians and
stalls with information about
the different problems in dif-
ferent countries. It was going
to be enjoyable and informa-
tive. Whats wrong with that?
It was going to last all week-
