1) Americans love new ideas. Their architects are always
thinking of new house styles, and some people are always ready to
buy them.
2) One well known idea of the 1970s was the “dome” house. It is
cheap and easy to build. If one wants to make a dome., he will go
and buy all the pieces and make his house in three or four days.
Domes can be big or small. There are thousands of dome houses all
over the USA. But domes are noisy inside, and it is not easy to keep
them dry and warm. Now only a small number of people are
building domes.
3) Things are changing in the US. Once, oil and electricity were
cheap, but now they are expensive. If people do not want to pay a lot
of money for light and heat, can keep their houses warm with heat
from the sun. The south walls of these “solar” houses are glass or
plastic. Heat from the sun warms water, and the hot water warms the
house.
4) Underground “earth” houses are another new idea. They are
warm in winter and cool in summer. The earth makes a blanket over
and around the house. Some earth houses have windows only in
the roof. Only the windows are above the ground. If you do not like
such house as far as you can’t see well through the roof, you will
build your earth house into the side of a hill. The back of the house
is under the hill, but the front is open. There are doors and windows.
Light comes in, and the people inside can look out.
5) The strangest idea of all comes from NASA, the Space
Administration. They have made plans for cities in space. Ten
thousand people can live in these big space stations. They can have
families, grow food, and stay there forever. Soon, people in the
space city will not need things from Earth. They can grow and make
everything they need in their space city.
