DEAN ATKINS: Mr. Arn, I explained to you last semester that in graduate school
you must maintain a B average. Getting Cs in graduate school is
not acceptable.
MR. ARN: But a C is a passing grade. What do you mean by saying I can’t
continue my studies here?
DEAN ATKINS: You are being suspended from school. You may reapply, if you
wish, in a year. But you may not study here next year.
MR. ARN: But I have to study here. I must be a full-time student to keep my
visa. If I don’t study full-time, I will get in trouble with
immigration.
DEAN ATKINS: I’m sorry, Mr. Arn. In that case, you will have to go home. We
will not let you continue your studies here next year.
MR. ARN: You don’t understand. I can’t go home! I can’t disappoint my
parents. I will bring shame to my family!
DEAN ATKINS: There is nothing I can do about that. I will be happy to assist you
in finding another school to transfer to if that is what you decide
to do. Thank you for coming in to see me. I wish you good luck in
your future endeavors.
C. The director of the English Language Program at a university has called Eric into
her office.
DIRECTOR: Eric, you have not gotten good grades this semester, and we cannot
recommend you to begin academic courses.
ERIC: I don’t understand. I passed everything. I worked hard and only bombed
two tests. I even aced a physics test.
DIRECTOR: Eric, you received a D in all of your courses.
ERIC: I didn’t suck up to my teachers and none of my teachers were easy
graders. But, anyway, D is passing.
DIRECTOR: A grade of D is barely passing. Students who receive a D in a course
have not adequately proved that they know the material.
