her producer about the “urgent business”, Hannah claimed that she had “returned
home because it was her dog’s birthday.” Hannah sued because the story implied
that she lacked professional commitment.
THE OUTCOME: Hannah proved that at the time in question, she had been at a
film festival with the permission of her Itch producer. (She also claimed that since
her dogs are strays, she does not know when their birthdays are). She has said
she was given “loads of money and an apology”.

CRUISIN’ FOR A BRUISIN’
Tom Cruise vs. Actustar (well, sort of), 2001
THE BATTLE: Tom Cruise’s latest fight-the-tabloids tactic seems to be working.
Cruise now goes after the sources of the reports, hoping to scare them into
recanting their salacious tales. Perhaps this is because libel – which requires
proof of knowing falsity or reckless disregard of the truth – is often tough for public
figures to prove. Cruise recently crushed a story in the French rag Actustar that
said he had a homosexual affair with porn star Chad Slater (real name Kyle
Bradford). Cruise’s defamation suit sought $ 100 million from Bradford.
THE OUTCOME: After getting slapped with the suit, Bradford retracted his illicit
account and retired from the porn industry.

OVEREXPOSED A-LISTER
Jennifer Aniston vs. Man’s World Publications and Crescent Publishing
group, 2000
THE BATTLE: The publishers of Celebrity Skin Magazine and the even raunchier
magazine High Society ran a story with eye-catching headlines: “First Time
Photos: Friends Stars X-posed – Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe Get naked!” and
“Rachel Gets Raunchy”, respectively, both with pictures of a nearly nude
Jennifer Aniston catching rays in her backyard. A lengthy suit claimed that “the
‘stalkerazzi’ saw Aniston topless in her backyard, climbed a wall, trespassed, and
took pictures without her consent.” Aniston said the photographs destroyed her
reputation, adding that she “has suffered shame, hurt, embarrassment, and
distress.”
THE OUTCOME: The suit is still being negotiated by lawyers – and, for now,
nobody’s talking.

TOO DRUNK TO VAMP?
Kate Moss vs. London’s Daily Mail, 1999
THE BATTLE: Supermodel Kate Moss sued the tab for libel after it reported that
Moss, who has admitted to past troubles with drugs and alcohol, showed up at a
photo shoot too loaded to work.
THE OUTCOME: Moss won her suit last May after her lawyer proved that she
was not even scheduled for work on the day in question. Moss was awarded an
undisclosed sum and was issued an apology by the tabloid.
