A war is raging between Hollywood heavies and the gossip rags that dish
the dirt on them. Here, the most salacious stories celebrities have gone to
court over.

Carol Burnett vs. The National Enquirer, 1976
THE BATTLE: Burnett was the first celeb to wage a no-holds-barred battle
against tabloid. The actress/comedian – a spokesperson for alcohol awareness
and the daughter of two alcoholics – sued The National Enquirer for $ 1,6 million
after it implied that she was drunk in public.
THE OUTCOME: In 1981 (five years later), a Los Angeles jury awarded Burnett
the money. But then came five more years of appeals. Eventually, the case with
the supermarket tabloid was settled for a significantly smaller sum: $ 200,000,
which Burnett donated to journalism programs at the University of California at
Berkeley and the University of Hawaii.

THE BATTLE: Actress Daryl Hannah sued Britain’s The Mirror for running a story
entitled “Jittery Daryl Goes Walkies. The article reported that Hannah had
unaccountably flown to L.A. when she should have been attending last-minute
