4 Read the following news story on TV advertisements. Then discuss the
questions below.
TV advertisers try the one-second sell
For many people the sight of a TV commercial is a prompt to visit the kitchen or
hit the remote control. The length of a traditional 60-second TV advertisement has
been halved a couple of times to keep up with our shortening attention spans and
because they cost less. Now some advertisers are experimenting with the snack-
proof and zap-proof advertisement - a one-second ad.
This kind of commercial has been called a "blink ad." It is cheaper to buy and
cheaper to make, but can you sell anything in one second? Advertisers say blink
ads cannot introduce a product but they can certainly reinforce well-known logos
and symbols such as McDonald's Golden Arches.
